Donna Moses passed away on September 26, 2022.

From the obituary:

Donna Jean Moses (nee Hrechko), beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Monday, September 26, 2022 at age 77. Her loss is felt deeply by her many friends and family. She is survived by her husband, Ron Moses, sons Matthew (Jennifer Hayes Moses) and Nicholas (Stephanie Medina Cas), daughter Alexandra (Justin Hyde) and four grandchildren, Alexander and Julian Moses, and Carter and Amelia Hyde. Moses was born to Alexander and Violet Hrechko on January 18, 1945, in Joliet, Illinois. She loved to tell stories about her childhood in Joliet and her friends, cousins, aunts and uncles who attended St. George Serbian Orthodox Church. The church and her family were central parts of her life even after moving to Aurora, Illinois in 1976. A lifelong teacher, Moses taught in St. Joseph, Michigan and Plainfield, Illinois before spending more than 20 years teaching in Aurora Public Schools. She retired from Simmons Middle School in 2007. She had a fondness for animals, not only raising cats and dogs, but helping rescue those in need, including a family of ducklings and an injured crow that she would bring into her classroom to show her students. An avid reader and birdwatcher, she always had a book close by and a pair of binoculars on the windowsill. No doubt she will be missed by the backyard birds she fed so well and her devoted Belgian sheepdog Dazzle. Moses is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Alexander Hrechko and her nephew Robert Hrechko. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 2, at Healy Chapel, 32 W Downer Pl, Aurora, IL 60506, beginning at 2 p.m. with prayer services at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 3, at 11 a.m. at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 300 Stryker Ave, Joliet, IL 60436. Donations can be made to St. George Serbian Orthodox Church and Friends of Phillips Park. For more information or to sign the online guestbook, call 630-897-9291 or visit HealyChapel.com.

I am incredibly grateful for the generosity of the Zari Foundation Scholarship and the Community Foundation in supporting my education. I am majoring in mechanical engineering with a concentration in aerospace engineering at the Rose-Hulman Institue of Technology. In my spare time, I volunteer on campus, in the community and I’m also the principal violist in the symphony orchestra. I hope to make an impact on the next chapter of space exploration by eventually working at a groundbreaking aerospace company such as SpaceX or NASA.

Education is important to us. We support causes that touch our lives and align with our values. We believe in paying it forward. We are here for a short time,, and it is the next generation that will take on what we leave behind.

Being a part of the Community Foundation scholarship committee is the highlight of my year. For many, a scholarship from the CFFRV is the reason they are able to continue reaching for their dreams and changing the future of our world. I hope each recipients knows just how inspirational they are to those of us who are lucky enough to read their stories.

YEP was a great experience to have in high school. I became a more confident person, someone with a lot more perspective. Coming from a small school, YEP allowed me to branch out into my community, meet students from other schools, and learn about their backgrounds. I made some great friends and still keep in touch with them today.

YEP has made me realize the importance of being involved in my community, and how to make a difference. There are a lot of problems in the world but if we can do everything that we can to help the world will become a better place. YEP has helped me realize this and encouraged me to help more people in the future.
