Richard Ormond passed away on April 13, 2023.

From the obituary:

Richard William Ormond passed away on April 13, 2023 following a valiant 4-year fight against prostate cancer. His final months were spent at Holy Cross Village in Notre Dame, Indiana. He was 70 years old. Rich Ormond was born on May 14, 1952 in Aurora, Illinois to Neal and Margery Ray Ormond. He attended Freeman and Washington schools and graduated in 1970 from West Aurora High School, all in School District 129. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1974, and an MBA from the University of Southern California in 1977. A resident of southern California for many years, Rich had a distinguished management career in numerous technology-based companies, beginning at Motorola in the 1970s during the early development of cell phones, and in later decades with several innovative Silicon Valley start-ups developing computer components. Rich had a strong allegiance to the University of Notre Dame. He was an avid supporter of all the Irish athletic teams, enthusiastically following their fortunes and celebrating their many successes. He regularly signed his communications with family and friends with GO IRISH! After retirement he relocated to South Bend where he enjoyed living on the banks of the St. Joseph River bordering the campus which allowed him to walk to athletic competitions and to engage in the full spectrum of university life. While Notre Dame was a passion, Rich’s greatest joy was watching his children, Carolyn and Alex, grow into such creative, successful, and independent adults. Carolyn and Alex were Rich’s most valued supporters during his difficult battles with the stages and setbacks of cancer, including being close by his side during his final weeks. Rich is survived by his daughter, Carolyn (Scott) of Palm Springs, California, and his son, Alex (Madoka) of Tokyo, Japan. He was predeceased by his parents, Neal and Margery Ray Ormond. He is survived by his siblings, Neal (Mary) Ormond of Aurora, Illinois, Martin (Andrea) Ormond of La Quinta, California, Nancy (Donald) Murphy of Batavia, Illinois, and Paul (Susan) Ormond of Savannah, Georgia. In addition, Rich is survived by 15 nieces and nephews, and two dozen grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Private funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Kaniewski Funeral Home in South Bend, Indiana, and interment will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the Notre Dame campus. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Rich’s memory to any of several Ormond Family funds (for West Aurora Teaching Excellence, Athletic Excellence and the Ormond Stadium Renovation) at the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, 111 W. Downer Place, Aurora, IL 60506; to the University of Notre Dame, Department of Development, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556; or to a charitable organization of the donor’s choice.

YEP was a great experience to have in high school. I became a more confident person, someone with a lot more perspective. Coming from a small school, YEP allowed me to branch out into my community, meet students from other schools, and learn about their backgrounds. I made some great friends and still keep in touch with them today.

YEP has made me realize the importance of being involved in my community, and how to make a difference. There are a lot of problems in the world but if we can do everything that we can to help the world will become a better place. YEP has helped me realize this and encouraged me to help more people in the future.

Being a part of the Community Foundation scholarship committee is the highlight of my year. For many, a scholarship from the CFFRV is the reason they are able to continue reaching for their dreams and changing the future of our world. I hope each recipients knows just how inspirational they are to those of us who are lucky enough to read their stories.

Education is important to us. We support causes that touch our lives and align with our values. We believe in paying it forward. We are here for a short time,, and it is the next generation that will take on what we leave behind.

I am incredibly grateful for the generosity of the Zari Foundation Scholarship and the Community Foundation in supporting my education. I am majoring in mechanical engineering with a concentration in aerospace engineering at the Rose-Hulman Institue of Technology. In my spare time, I volunteer on campus, in the community and I’m also the principal violist in the symphony orchestra. I hope to make an impact on the next chapter of space exploration by eventually working at a groundbreaking aerospace company such as SpaceX or NASA.
