The Shirley Borel Journalism Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to students majoring in journalism at Waubonsee Community College.

Veterans of the United States Armed Forces are given special consideration for these awards.

The scholarship is funded by Indigo Debrah Johnson, a former student of Mrs. Borel’s.

Shirley Borel graduated from Marquette University with a degree in journalism. She taught journalism at Waubonsee Community College for over thirty years.

She also was the founder of the Waubonsee College newspaper, Insight.  Her determination and insistence on finding and reporting the truth were a reflection of her high ethical standards.

It is in this spirit that scholarships are awarded in her name to future journalism students.

Mrs. Borel lost her life in a traffic accident in April of 2006.  She was survived by her husband and three children.

As a first-generation college student from a low-income family, I was worried about how I was going to pay for books and supplies. This scholarship will allow me to focus more on my studies instead of worrying about how to afford college. I am working to not only create opportunities for myself but to motivate future generations. Thank you so much for helping me along this journey!

A community foundation is a donor-driven organization that helps donors custom-design funds that reflect their charitable interests. Through the years, grants from these funds have made a significant impact on our local communities.

…you can always start small, even $25 can make a difference. Remember we can’t take our money with us. Even if it’s just your gift of time. Volunteer and get involved.
